PLATTSBURGH — Georgia-Pacific has sponsored five educators to attend the 2013 Founders Fellowship Program.
Attendees will study what it means to live in a free society, how America’s founding principles shape the country and how they have evolved. These are just some of the topics that the program discusses. Geared toward helping teachers educate students about America’s founders and their ideas, this conference gives secondary teachers the training needed to effectively teach economic and civil liberty.
Georgia-Pacific sponsored five high-school teachers from Alabama, New York, Oregon and Wisconsin to attend the week-long conference in Washington, D.C., July 22 to 26. Local Social Studies teacher Chris Hartmann from Stafford Middle School represented Plattsburgh. Teachers from Georgia-Pacific’s 200 facility communities across the country were eligible to apply.
“As part of the Georgia-Pacific Foundation’s focus on education and entrepreneurship, we support programs that teach practical economic principles and the benefits of a free-enterprise system,” said Curley Dossman, president of the Georgia-Pacific Foundation. “We realize the value of teaching these concepts to young people, and the Founders Fellowship program aims to help educators be better equipped to bring these complex concepts to life for students.”
Aimed at civics, history, government and economics teachers, one of the program goals is to help the next generation understand the Constitution and the freedoms and opportunities it provides. The conference offers lectures by constitutional scholars and classroom lessons on topics including property and commerce and the Constitution, public-policy debates about central economic planning and Supreme Court decisions regarding property rights, among others.
Teachers also visited historic sites including the National Archives and Mount Vernon and toured national monuments. Participants were eligible to receive 30 hours of continuing learning credits and received lesson-plan ideas aligned with national and state standards to bring back to the classroom.

MALONE — Kent Brooks, chief executive officer of Hospice of the North Country, is one of five administrators in New York State to be awarded the credential Certified Hospice and Palliative Care Administrator (CHPCA).
The certification is awarded by the National Board for Certification of Hospice and Palliative Nurses (NBCHPN). Brooks earned the voluntary CHPCA certification by successfully completing a computer-based exam that is offered four times annually at testing centers across the country. The exam measures the level of knowledge in a variety of areas, including leadership, fiscal management, human-resource management and ethics.
Certification indicates a tested and proven competency across the spectrum of hospice and palliative care. It is also a recognized indicator of quality among patients and their families, as well as physicians, medical providers and the federal government.
“We applaud Kent for setting precedence for the Hospice team with his continuous pursuit of personal and professional growth,” said Rebecca Preve, president of the Hospice of the North Country Board of Directors. “His commitment to the patients Hospice serves is reflected in his recent achievement.”
Brooks joined Hospice of the North Country in 2006 as the director of volunteer services. A year later, he began serving as CEO managing all Hospice of the North Country programs in the Malone and Plattsburgh locations. His responsibilities include ensuring the needs of the community and requirements of all regulatory agencies are met.
Brooks earned a bachelor’s degree in Pastoral Ministries from the Bethany Bible College, Sussex, New Brunswick, Canada. He is a co-vice chair of the Hospice and Palliative Care Association of New York State, chair of its Certificate of Need Task Force and member of its Board of Trustees.
— Hospice of the North Country also recently welcomed Cathlyn Lamitie to its leadership team. Lamitie has joined the organization as the director of development and communications.
In her new position, Lamitie is responsible for managing the organization’s fundraising events, annual campaigns, planned giving programs and communications initiatives. She will help shape and execute a strategic plan that is designed to ensure patients and families receive exceptional Hospice care by compassionate and skilled health-care professionals.
Prior to joining Hospice, Lamitie was employed at Alice Hyde Medical Center for more than 13 years, most recently as the director of communications and philanthropy. She earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communications from the State University at New Paltz.
PLATTSBURGH — Several Adirondack Coast lodging properties have been spotlighted with awards, according to the Adirondack Coast Visitors Bureau .
These awards include the 2013 Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence. The accolade, which honors hospitality excellence, is given only to establishments that consistently achieve outstanding traveler reviews on Trip Advisor and is extended to qualifying businesses worldwide.
Only the top-performing 10 percent of businesses listed on Trip Advisor receive this award. To qualify, businesses must maintain an overall rating of four or higher out of a possible five as reviewed by travelers on Trip Advisor and must have been listed on Trip Advisor for at least 12 months. Additional criteria include the volume of reviews received within the last 12 months.

PLATTSBURGH — The Rotary Club of Plattsburgh has named its 2013 Paul Harris Fellows recipients.
Paul Harris was a Chicago, Ill., attorney best known for founding Rotary International in 1905, a service organization that currently has well over one million members worldwide. Many Rotary Clubs honor individuals as Paul Harris Fellows who meet high professional and personal standards set forth by Paul Harris and others who have contributed more than $1,000 to the Annual Program Fund, the Polio Plus Fund or the Humanitarian Grants Program of the Rotary Foundation.
Courtney Chandler with Agency Insurance joined the club four years ago. Chandler participates in the Membership Committee, Fishing Tournament, Fun and Fellowship, Honor Guard, Alternative Break, Rotaract, 1st Thursday and the Bed Race, and currently serves as a board member.
Dr. Erik Eaglefeather, owner of Eagle’s Nest Veterinary Hospital, joined the club in 1999. Participating in the Fishing Tournament, Rotary Store, Honor Guard and Battle of Plattsburgh, Eaglefeather was a major supporter of the Centennial Park Project.
Brian Hammond has been dedicated to the club since joining in 1985. Hammond has been involved in numerous club committees and activities over the years, including the Board of Directors, Fishing Tournament, RoDucky Derby and Radio Day, having also dedicated a year as club president. His most recent involvements include the Program Committee, co-chair of the Centennial Park project, Honor Guard, and permanent greeter as the 50/50 seller. He will receive the 5 Sapphire Pin Honor.
A special honor this year will go to Roderic and Dodie Giltz, who will receive the Major Donor Award Crystal and Pins for their continued support of the Rotary Foundation. The Major Donor Award is given to individuals who through continuous support of the foundation reach a minimum cumulative donation of $10,000.
The Paul Harris Dinner will take place Tuesday, Sept. 24, at the American Legion Post 20, Quarry Road, Plattsburgh. Cocktails are at 5:30 p.m., dinner at 6:15. The cost is $30 per person. Reservations are needed by Wednesday, Sept 18.

PLATTSBURGH — Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) Associations of Northern New York will be holding free workshops on the new federal healthcare insurance options at several regional sites starting Sept. 24 with sessions in Plattsburgh and Westport. Sessions will be offered Sept. 25 in Malone.
Specially trained extension educators Kirk Shoen, Sandra Buxton and Ashley Pierce will address a wide range of questions including those about the Individual Exchange for sole proprietors and individuals and the Small Business Health Options Exchange.

PLATTSBURGH — The Cornelia Street Office of Glens Falls National Bank and Trust Co. will host a pet- and family-friendly Community Appreciation Day on Friday.
The event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 308 Cornelia Street in Plattsburgh will include Dunkin’ Donuts coffee and donuts in the morning and a cookout for lunch. There will be face painting and balloons with Pipsqueak the Clown from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office will issue child ID cards from 1 to 3 p.m.
In addition, the Elmore SPCA will feature adoptable animals, and Pawfection Pet Grooming will be on-site to offer grooming services for pets from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. (proof of valid rabies vaccination required).
Donations will be accepted at the event for the Elmore SPCA, including supplies such as pet food. Proceeds from two basket raffles featuring items for cats and dogs will also benefit the nonprofit organization.
