First Weekends returns

PLATTSBURGH — The new initiative in the City of Plattsburgh called First Weekends returns today.

Special events are being held 5 to 7 tonight and 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday.

The aim is to draw tourists and families to downtown Plattsburgh and the businesses located there.

First Weekends combines an Art Walk with exhibits by local artists and free street performances by local musicians. 

Art Walk locations include the Great Adirondack Soup Company, Plattsburgh Public Library, North Country Cultural Center for the Arts, Strand Theatre, ROTA Gallery and Studios, Cheechako Taco, Koffee Kat, Mountain Riders, Cache Elegant, Irises, The Pepper, Champlain Wine Company, North Country Food Co-op, Urban Soles and Furniture and Decor.

People are encouraged to a walk spot to spot to check out artwork by local artists. That takes place both days.

Here are some of the activities planned.

TODAY

A sidewalk Chalk Art competition will be held throughout downtown, and family art activities are planned at the North Country Cultural Center for the Arts.

Champlain Wine Company will hold a wine and cheese art opening featuring the photography of Meg Risley and a Style and also a “Substance-Free Advice Night” with Sally Meisenheimer and Michele Armani, which starts at 5:30 p.m.

Musicians scheduled to perform, starting at 5 p.m., include Convergence, Ben Bright, Jay Lesage, Giovanini Bucci, Bruce Lawson, James VanEtten, Herb Carter Jr. and Haley Wright-McGivney. 

Music locations are along Oak Street, Margaret Street, Durkee Avenue, City Hall Place, Clinton Street and Bridge Street.

SATURDAY

First Weekends will feature a screening of “Wreck It Ralph” at the Plattsburgh Public Library at 2 p.m. 

Chalk Art voting ballots will be available at the Center for the Arts.

A Youth Chalk Drawing will take place at City Hall Place at 2 p.m. That location will also have family activities sponsored by Champlain Valley Transportation Museum, an 1874 photo display by the Greater Adirondack Ghost and Tour Company and family science activities by the Imaginarium Children’s Museum.

Scheduled to perform starting at 2 p.m. are Jay Lesage, Haley Wright-McGivney, Lowell, Kevin & Friends, Dirty Diapers, Stanley Ransom, Ralph Senecal, Liesa & the Masouda World Dance Ensemble and Derrick Hackett.

Music locations are along Oak Street, Margaret Street, Durkee Avenue, City Hall Place, Clinton Street and Bridge Street.

DISCOUNTS

Some businesses will offer discounts for those who visit today and return on Saturday.

The initial First Weekend was held June 7 and 8, planned by local businesses.

The Plattsburgh City Common Council has agreed to close off a section of City Hall Place for the event.
