New tourism magazine to promote region


PLATTSBURGH — The Adirondack Coast Visitors Bureau and SUNY Plattsburgh Journalism Department have teamed to create a magazine to tout the Adirondack and Lake Champlain regions.

The full-color magazine, titled DoNorth, will be circulated on PenAir flights originating from Plattsburgh; Presque Isle, Maine; Bar Harbor, Maine; and Boston.

SUNY Plattsburgh assistant professor Luke Cyphers, who serves as a faculty adviser to the magazine, said students in the Journalism 411 class will do all the reporting, writing, editing and photography.

The magazine is to be published twice a year, with the first issue slated for May.

Editor-in-Chief Alexandria Sisson said it has been a tremendous experience to create a real product. She has enjoyed her time at the university, she said, which is in an area she loves and first visited with her parents on vacations.

“Being here has really added to my life,” Sisson said. “We live in this amazing place. We want you to see it.”

Plans call for 10,000 copies per issue. Each issue is expected to contain stories centered on the Champlain Valley, Adirondack Mountains and surrounding areas.

The goal is to attract visitors through promotion of available recreation, goods and services.

The Visitors Bureau is helping fund production costs.

Cyphers said the Journalism Department is excited about the opportunity.

“Thanks to the Visitors Bureau’s support, our students have the opportunity to publish twice a year, with a real-world mission to cover the Adirondack Coast’s growth as a travel destination,” he said in a press release.

“And thanks to PenAir’s distribution, the students’ work will be seen by a regional — even international — audience.”
