Wheeler said that as she approached her 40th birthday, her husband, John Wheeler, asked her what she wanted to do in the future.

“I told him I always wanted to be a salon owner,” she said. “This is my passion.”

Business well known

After two years in the cosmetology program at CV-TEC, Wheeler graduated June 18. While at school, she was a recipient of the National Technical Honor Society award.

Wheeler said Sassy Images has been well known for 10 years. All of the stylists, including former owner Kelli Calongne, have stayed with the business.

“I want to thank her for building such a great business,” she said.

Some of those stylists have more than 20 years experience in the industry. All undergo continuing training and education to keep up with industry trends and meet the needs of their clients.

The stylists work well together and provide a vibrant social atmosphere.

“I’m very honored to be part of their well-established team,” Wheeler said. “They have been very receptive of me and where I want to take Sassy Images.”

There has even been one new hire, Stasi Caron, which brings the number of stylists to 13. Wheeler said she plans to add even more.

The salon has undergone renovation since Wheeler took over. The interior is spacious and bright, with windows along three sides of the room. Tile floors make clean-ups a breeze.

Two new styling stations have been added for a total of 12. There is also a separate manicure and pedicure room.

Owner bilingual

Matrix and Redken styling products are used in the salon and are also available for sale.

The entire salon is American with Disabilities Act compliant.

Wheeler speaks French, which is a plus with the number of French-speaking customers who patronize the salon.

Sassy Images has a well-established customer base, but the stylists are always looking for new clients. Wheeler said many of those customers have told her they appreciate the changes to the salon, as well as that the previous owner is still there.

“I’m taking over a great established business,” Wheeler said. “I want to enhance its long-standing reputation.”

One of the new innovations is a new Versa Spa automatic spray-on tanning system that was installed last week. It offers users their choice of three applications.

Wheeler said she will continue to explore other services to offer. She is also exploring the possibility of offering package deals with other local businesses.

Wheeler and her husband have been in business for themselves since 2001 and continue to operate a number of local business. That experience will help as she runs the day-to-day operations at the salon, she said.

Sassy Images accepts cash, checks, major credit cards and Cardinal Cash. Gift certificates are also available.

Special appointments available

The salon is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. Special appointments are also available by calling 566-8888.

Wheeler thanked the other stylists for welcoming her into the fold.

“The success of this business is due to the stylists and their dedication to the ever-changing dynamics of the business.”
