Allegiant to start service to Punta Gorda in Florida

PLATTSBURGH — PLATTSBURGH — Allegiant Air will offer nonstop jet service between Plattsburgh and Fort Myers/Punta Gorda, Fla., starting Feb. 23, 2013.

Allegiant Travel Company President Andrew Levy said they are pleased to add the flights; that destination had been served by Direct Air until that company declared bankruptcy and ceased operation in late 2011.

“We are confident the community will appreciate the value of flying nonstop to Southwest Florida and the value of bundling their air, hotel and car-rental reservation together,” Levy said in a press release.

The new flights will operate round-trip flights on Wednesday and Saturday beginning Feb. 23, although that schedule may change depending on the season. Punta Gorda Airport is centrally located, midway between the beaches of Fort Myers and Sarasota’s tropical island communities. The region is popular for its beach-front dining, exotic wildlife and a variety of recreation in the Gulf of Mexico.

Plattsburgh North Country Chamber of Commerce President Garry Douglas welcomed the announcement.

“Plattsburgh International was already the affordable fun-and-sun airport for northern New York and the Montreal region, and now Punta Gorda and Southwest Florida join all of the other great destinations being enjoyed from ‘Montreal’s U.S. airport,’” he said in a statement.

“We know from past experience that this service will be another success for our airport and for Allegiant, and the chamber and its members are very pleased to have been able to work with our partners at Allegiant to help make this happen.”

Plattsburgh International Airport Manager Chris Krieg said the county welcomes the resumption of non-stop service between Plattsburgh and Punta Gorda.

“Since commencing service at Plattsburgh in 2007, Allegiant Air has been instrumental to the success of the airport,” he said. “The addition of Punta Gorda service, along with the recently announced Las Vegas flights, points to the strength of the Plattsburgh/Montreal market, and we look forward to the continued partnership between Allegiant Air and the Plattsburgh International Airport and the pursuit of future growth opportunities.”

The company will introduce the new service with fares as low as $109.99 one way. However, that fare is not available on all flights, and tickets must be purchased by Dec. 12.

Plattsburgh travelers can save even more when they book air, hotel, car and attraction reservations together, the press release said. Allegiant partners with many of the area’s hotel properties, provides car rentals through its partnership with Alamo Rent a Car and offers deals on activities such as dinner and ocean exploration cruises. For additional charges, flight schedules, reservations and travel-related products such as hotel rooms and attraction tickets, visit

Las Vegas-based Allegiant Travel Company is focused on linking travelers in small cities to world-class leisure destinations, the release said. And the company operates “a low-cost, high-efficiency, all-jet passenger airline” through its Allegiant Air subsidiary.

The company has been named one of America’s 100 Best Small Companies by Forbes Magazine for four consecutive years.
