TICONDEROGA — Glens Falls National Bank and Trust Co. has promoted Vice President Joseph C. Melucci to Branch Services Manager, and Branch Managers Bella R. Boardway and Starr L. Pinkowski to officers at the Port Henry and Ticonderoga/Ticonderoga Drive-In offices, respectively.

In his new role, Melucci will assist and support branches with their sales efforts and goals. He joined the bank in 2001 as an assistant branch manager and has been elected to the company’s High Performance Club three times. He is also a recipient of the Bank’s Community Service Award.

He serves as board president for the Adirondack Samaritan Counseling Center and volunteers as a Hudson Falls Little League coach. Melucci earned an associate’s degree in Business Administration from Adirondack Community College, is a graduate of Hudson Falls High School and holds Series 6 and 63 securities licenses.

In her role as Port Henry branch manager and now branch officer, Boardway oversees operations and serves customers at the Port Henry Office. She joined the bank in 1990 as a Resource Recovery Team member and was elected to the High Performance Club in 2007.

Boardway serves on the Moriah Chamber of Commerce Board and volunteers with Warren County Shop with a Cop. She is a graduate of Schroon Lake Central School.

In her role as Ticonderoga Branch Manager and now Branch Officer, Pinkowski oversees operations and serves customers at the Ticonderoga and Ticonderoga Drive-In Offices. She joined the bank in 2007 as a customer service representative.

She is a graduate of Ticonderoga Central School and serves on the Ticonderoga Area Chamber of Commerce Board and as a member of the Best 4th in the North Committee.

IP appointment

TICONDEROGA — Paul Blanchard has been named vice president, supply chain, Industrial Packaging Group for International Paper, according to Mark Sutton, senior vice president.

He will continue to report to Tom Cleves, vice president and general manager, Containerboard and Recycling, IPG, and he will continue to be a member of the IPG and Containerboard & Recycling Lead Teams and the company’s Global Supply Chain Council.

Blanchard’s career at IP began in 1982 when he served in production operations at the Ticonderoga mill. In 1987, he joined the company’s Printing and Communications Papers team in the customer service organization. Over the next several years, he held leadership roles across P&C Papers in product management, sales and marketing and supply chain and operations, which included managing nine converting plants, planning and scheduling, inventory management, logistics and customer service.

In 2008, he lead the company’s supply-chain transformation initiative and, two years later, he was named director, supply chain, Consumer Packaging. Most recently, in late 2011, Blanchard was named director, supply chain, IPG.

“Paul is a strong and proven leader for International Paper,” Sutton said. “Our Industrial Packaging businesses of Containerboard, Container The Americas and Recycling continue to benefit greatly from Paul’s more than 30 years of experience and knowledge. He knows the supply-chain process and operations extremely well, but he also knows how to lead people and get results.”

A graduate of Christian Brothers University in Memphis, Tenn., Blanchard holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with a focus in marketing. He also attended Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management’s Executive Marketing Program and the Executive Finance Program at Columbia University.

He is a member of The Global Supply Chain Forum, Fisher College of Business at Ohio State University and the Fogelman College of Business and Economics Advisory Board at The University of Memphis. A native of Ticonderoga, he is a graduate of Ticonderoga High School. He and his family will continue to reside in the Memphis area.

Building seminar

PLATTSBURGH — Plattsburgh Housing Outlet Inc. will hold a Home Building Seminar on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Dino’s Pizza, 795 Route 3 (formerly Broadview Deli, next to Wilson Appliance) in Plattsburgh.

The seminar will offer guidance on topics such as lender requirements, manufactured and modular homes, advice on finding and developing a building site and time frames for home building. Experts from all areas of construction and banking will give an overview of the process and participants will also have the opportunity to ask questions during the second hour.

Business mixer

PLATTSBURGH — Imaginarium, Days Inn and Pasquale’s Pizzeria will host the next North Country Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours. 

The chamber invites area business people to the mixer on Thursday from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The event will be held at Imaginarium Children’s Museum, 4709 St. Rt. 9, Plattsburgh.

The event will feature a birthday bash complete with a gift bag for everyone to take home. Participants can check out their first phase of exhibits and learn what Imaginarium is all about.

Grant awarded

TICONDEROGA — Fort Ticonderoga recently received a grant from Champlain National Bank supporting school outreach programs in several northern New York communities in 2013.

“Fort Ticonderoga, recognized as one of America’s most significant historic sites, is the gem of the North Country,” said Joe Shaw, president and CEO of Champlain National Bank. “We are so happy to increase awareness of this tremendous educational resource that we have in our region.”

Funding from Champlain National Bank will enable fourth-grade classes at schools in Crown Point, Elizabethtown, Keene, Lake Placid, Westport and Willsboro to bring an Interpreter from Fort Ticonderoga into the classroom to share the experience of being a soldier on the Lake Champlain frontier during the American Revolution. During the program, students learn about the daily life of soldiers.

Students have a hands-on experience with high-quality reproductions that Continental soldiers carried during the Revolution. Students obtain an understanding of the purpose and function of each item and the larger concepts related to service in America’s War for Independence.

“The most effective way for students to learn about their history is for them to experience it,” said Beth Hill, Fort Ticonderoga’s president and CEO. “This expeditionary learning program connects students to a variety of inter-disciplinary topics and activities through the lens of Fort Ticonderoga’s history and helps teachers meet core curriculum goals.”

Funding will be available on a first-come, first-served basis for Crown Point Central School, Elizabethtown-Lewis Central School, Keene Central School, Lake Placid Central School, Westport Central School and Willsboro Central School.

Financial seminar

ELIZABETHTOWN — The Elizabethtown Community Hospital Ethics Committee will present a seminar titled Your Financial Health focused on financial issues related to planning on Wednesday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Speakers will be Tom LaPage and Justin Hooper, financial advisers at Community Bank. It will be held in the ECH Board Room and is free and open to the public.

There also will be a seminar titled Community Resources for Aging Family Members focused on organizations and resources related to aging on March 27, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The speaker will be Heidi Palmer of the Essex County Office for the Aging. It is also in the Board Room and is free and open to the public.

Trip to Ireland

PLATTSBURGH — The North Country Chamber of Commerce and Mountain Lake PBS are teaming up to offer a group travel experience called Discover Ireland.

A free Informational webinar will be held on Wednesday from noon to 1 p.m. Attendees may participate from their own computer at home or at the office or can join the group at the Chamber of Commerce office, 7061 Route 9, Plattsburgh.

The webinar will give details about a nine-day, seven-night tour of Ireland that begins Oct. 30. The itinerary includes Dublin, Waterford, Killarney, Limerick, Galway and Cong. While in Ireland, attendees will visit the Waterford Crystal Visitors Center, Muckross House, Kylemore Abbey, Trinity College, Blarney Castle, the Cliffs of Moher, the Irish National Stud and more. There will be dinner at Ashford Castle.

Food drive

PLATTSBURGH — The Advocacy and Resource Center, as part of the NYSARC Gives Back initiative and in conjunction with Disabilities Awareness Month, will be conducting a Food Drive throughout the month of March to benefit the JCEO and Interfaith Food Shelves.

Representatives from the ARC to include individuals from Champlain Valley Industries and PATH Day Habilitation sites will be decorating boxes, delivering them to various commercial and community sites, and will periodically retrieve all donations from each location throughout the month.

All food items will be picked up no later than Friday for delivery to the food shelves the final week of March.

Tournament impact

PLATTSBURGH — The summer series of Plattsburgh-based pro bass fishing tournaments bring in $2.7 million annually in direct and indirect spending to the region, according to an economic-impact study sponsored by the Adirondack Coast Visitors Bureau, a division of the North Country Chamber of Commerce.

The study also revealed that through anglers’ ancillary visits to the region, in preparation for their respective tournaments, the economic impact grows to $8.2 million. Colin Read, principal consultant of Economic Insights, and lead on the study, reported that the fishing tournaments in Plattsburgh bring significant revenue to the community.

“When compared to each dollar invested in hosting fees, the region stands to gain upwards of $95, depending on our assumptions,” he said. “As we begin to measure additional impacts over time, we may even discover the economic impact to be larger yet. In terms of community investment, there are few projects one could imagine with a similar positive return.”

The study, calculating the economic impact of the 2012 pro tournament season on Lake Champlain, reported as follows:

▶ $2,742,581 generated annually for the region in direct spending;

▶ $8,227,714 million generated annually with the inclusion of ancillary visits;

▶ 8,330 room nights;

▶ 34.5 full-time regional jobs created.

In addition to the economic impact of the tournaments, ongoing media exposure and recognition worldwide from outlets such as ESPN and the Versus Network, reaching 90 million and 61 million households respectively, increases the potential impact on Clinton County as Lake Champlain and Plattsburgh become synonymous with world-class fishing.

Green shuttle bus

LAKE PLACID — The Village of Lake Placid recently unveiled a new hybrid-electric shuttle bus that will make commuting on public transportation quieter and cleaner. Financing for the bus was made possible through the New York Power Authority’s (NYPA) Municipal Electric-Drive Vehicle Program, which provides financial assistance to New York municipal utilities to facilitate the replacement of less fuel-efficient vehicles in order to advance Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s clean-energy goals.

“The electric and hybrid-electric vehicles made available through the New York Power Authority’s great program are a perfect fit for Lake Placid, and over the years we have taken advantage of the program to the point where our Electric Department fleet is almost entirely alternatively-fueled,” said Mayor Craig H. Randall. “Lake Placid prides itself on its natural beauty and access to great outdoor sports, so transportation options with low environmental impact that reduce our carbon footprint are right up our alley.”

The 14-passenger hybrid-electric shuttle bus, which was supplied by the NY Bus company in Chenango, is the first hybrid vehicle to be put into the village-public transportation fleet. It will operate in rotation with Lake Placid’s free trolley service, traveling in a 10-mile continuous loop in and around Lake Placid making stops at hotels, supermarkets, area health-service facilities and other points of interest.

The Lake Placid shuttle bus was purchased at a cost of $106,000, of which nearly half was paid for by the Power Authority and the remainder financed by NYPA with a three-year, interest-free loan.

Through the NYPA program, the Village of Lake Placid previously purchased a hybrid-electric bucket truck, three hybrid-electric pickup trucks, two hybrid-electric sport-utility vehicles and two all-electric off-road utility vehicles.

NYPA’s Clean Transportation Program has placed more than 1,200 hybrid and all-electric vehicles in the fleets of numerous towns, villages and cities across New York State. These vehicles have traveled more than 11 million miles, cumulatively.

New member

SARANAC LAKE — The National Association of Senior Move Managers (NASMM) has welcomed Gloria Volz of Adirondack Organized Solutions as its newest member.

Volz started Adirondack Organized Solutions in 2007 as a part-time venture. Something she has always enjoyed doing is helping people find solutions and systems specific to their unique spaces and learning styles. Since 2007, Volz has become absorbed in the professional organizing industry.

The mission of Adirondack Organized Solutions is to assist individuals, family members and small businesses in finding solutions to their organizing situations whether related to a one-time situation, a life transition or an ongoing challenge. In January, Volz earned her Certificate in Senior Move Management prior to joining NASMM.

“My membership with NASMM provides access to support and resources to client-centered senior move services as well as being a source to enhance my knowledge around the same.” Volz said. “I look forward to working with NASMM to build a resource network for those families and individuals who are looking for help with downsizing for a move or aging in place.”
