Hospital gets OK to move cardiac surgery

Program gets new location at Fletcher Allen

PLATTSBURGH — CVPH Medical Center has received approval from the New York State Department of Health to move its cardiac-surgery program to Fletcher Allen Health Care.

The shift is expected to be complete by March 1.

CVPH decided to drop the local program, due to falling numbers of surgeries and nationwide changes in health care, and to instead concentrate on cardiac angioplasty and electrophysiology procedures that do not require cardiac-surgery backup.

The local program will be called the Northern New York Center of Cardiac Excellence.

“This decision was based on volume and quality,” CVPH said it its STAT newsletter to employees. “Both nationally and regionally, cardiac surgeries have decreased while the number of PCI and EP procedures are on the rise.

“We are all aware that the more you do something, the better you are at it. The decision to consolidate the surgical program to FAHC was not easy, and we should give credit to our Board of Directors for making the right, albeit tough, choice.

“The Northern New York Center of Cardiac Excellence will also feature our superb team of medical cardiologists. This center of excellence will, in turn, be an important piece of the puzzle as we work to develop an integrated approach to high-quality cardiovascular care as part of the Fletcher Allen Partners.

“This regional cardiovascular service line will optimize care coordination across the system, increase operational efficiencies and expand our geographical reach.”
