PLATTSBURGH — Emily Harris had to straighten the pictures on her wall after an earthquake shook up her house early Wednesday.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey website, the temblor was centered near Mont-Saint-Hilaire, Quebec, northwest of Montreal and north of St. Jean sur Richelieu. It measured 3.9 on the Richter scale.
“All of a sudden, I felt the house shaking,” said Harris, who lives in Plattsburgh. “A few seconds later, it happened again.”
She and her husband, John, had not gone to bed yet, so they saw their TV shaking, the pictures shuddering on the walls.
A small flurry of posts on the Press-Republican facebook page showed others felt it, too, including Je Crawford in Massena.
Who else felt it?
Matt Martino: yea i did, it was purty decent in plattsburgh.
Judy Laramie: yes..first thought it was a truck but at that hour and the duration suspected it was an earthquake...
Mandi Reome McKee: We felt it also, we are in plattsburgh, the hubby thought it was the dryer rattling, I knew it wasnt!!
The Geological Survey ranks an earthquake of 3.9 magnitude as “weak to light” in strength, causing no damage.
The agency invites people to describe their earthquake experiences at http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/usb000d3l5#dyfi.
