Fall foliage gaining brilliance

ALBANY — Some parts of the Adirondacks are reaching the midway point for fall foliage change this weekend, along with points in Central New York.

In Franklin County, I Love NY foliage spotters in the Mt. Arab/Tupper Lake areas expect 45 to 50 percent color change with muted-to-average shades of goldenrod, mustard and pumpkin predominating.

Some trees are starting to show a burgundy glow with some scarlet tints, a press release said.

In Wilmington in Essex County, observers at Whiteface Mountain project 25 percent leaf transition as shades of red and orange continue to emerge from the green backdrop. Lake Placid is also expected to show about 25 percent color change, with green, red and orange leaves of average brilliance, the release said.

Indian Lake leaf peepers project 20 to 25 percent foliage transition there this weekend.

“Green is still the predominating color across the landscape, but the brilliant reds of the ‘swamp’ maples have arrived, and shades of yellow are on the way.”

In the Hudson Valley, leaf peepers will see change of about 15 percent in the Highland area of Ulster County, with some hints of bright red leaves.

Foliage progress is updated at every Wednesday through the season.
