Pumpkin Caddis sought by trout

Focus On Fly-Fishing

With the fall season getting under way this week, there are many insects that the fly fishermen associate with the last few weeks of the season. Nearly every fly fisherman\woman knows about the Isonychia Bicolor. It is the longest hatch of the year, appearing the last weeks of September into the the month of November.

There are, however, other insects that always appear during September and October. One of these is an orange Caddis fly that trout find a prominent food source. It is a larger Caddis by most standards -- about a size 12 and a good imitation is tied with an orange deer hair down wing and a rusty orange Australian body. I usually tie about five or six hundred of these during September. Other Insects of equal importance are the little Blue Winged Olive and a dun color Caddis -- also a size 12 and 14. If you plan on fly fishing over the next five or six weeks, be sure to have a couple of patterns that imitate those insects.

They are the Dark Dun Haystack to imitate the Isonychia, the Pumpkin Caddis pattern, the tiny (18 or 20) Blue Winged Olive and the dun Caddis. Until we get some rain and the river levels rise, you will be more successful fishing the pocket and faster sections of the streams. This past week, reports of a few 18- to 20- inch trout were taken so the fishing is getting better with the cooler nights. This is also the time when the water in the ponds and lakes start to homogenize and the fish will be closer to the surface.

Look for some good Rainbow, Landlocked Salmon and Brook trout fishing in your favorite lake for the next few weeks. As for the Landlocked Salmon that come up in the rivers to spawn, we need rain to bring the water up to get the fish moving. Time for another rain dance.
