Fly-fishing at its best in July

Focus On Fly-Fishing

Although its been a pretty rainy past month, the rivers are still on the low side, but the water temperatures are ranging in the low 60s, hovering at 61 degrees the past few days.

There have been some good catches of fish taken on pheasant-tail nymphs, bead-head zugbugs and Caddis emergers. We are also seeing some cream variants, sulfurs and stone flies. Ausable Bombers are still taking the larger fish -- in the fast water pockets and riffles.

If you like fishing the slower sections of the stream, use small Caddis and Klinkhammer emergers. They work well in the pools and slower sections of the river.

The big hatch on the lakes right now is the Hexegenia Limbatta, the largest Mayfly that comes off in the East. These large flies begin to come off the end of June and continue through the first two weeks of July. The best time to fish for the rainbows, when they follow the hatch up from the bottom, is from just before dark until around midnight. A large Bomber is hardly ever refused when fishing that hatch. Just be sure to impart a little action to the fly to get the fish's attention.

Lake Placid is noted for its good Hex hatches that come off this time every year. With some warmer temperatures ahead and stream temperatures rising to the high 60s, you will be seeing lots of flying ants. That's a good time to fish the small cinnamon ants early morning and late evening hours.

The entire month of July looks like a banner month on the rivers.
