Daughters hooked on the outdoors

In my 18 years of writing the Outdoors Page, the most feedback, by far, I've ever received was not about mountain lions or moose, but rather about trips I've taken with my daughter, starting when she was 3 years old back in 1990.

At 21, she still comes with me occasionally. When I look back at our outdoor adventures, I realize that I am lucky to have a daughter interested in fishing, hiking and camping.

If I am once blessed, then Bruce Dashnaw, who I recently talked with, is a father with double my luck. Bruce and his two daughters, 14-year-old Brittany and 7-year-old Desiree, have shared outdoor experiences for years; the girls especially love to join him on his fishing trips, as well as other general outdoor activities.

Bruce, who lives in the Town of Saranac, says, "I really enjoy taking them with me. They seem to like it and it's a good way for us to get to know each other."

Desiree agrees.

"I like being out there with my father, and I like catching fish."

And catching fish is something the Dashnaws do well. On a recent trip up a stream draining into Upper Chateaugay Lake Inlet, Bruce and Desiree caught their limit of brook trout. "But," Bruce says, "we threw the small ones back."

They had hoped to use worms, dug from their front lawn, on that trip, however, they had to improvise.

"We were in the canoe going upstream," Desiree told me. "Dad left worms on the deck of the canoe, and after all that paddling," she said laughing, "he turned and knocked the worms into the water."

Using Panther Martins instead, they still caught their limit of fish.

At 14, Brittany is starting to get more involved in teen activities like gymnastics, track and volleyball and, of course, socializing, according to her mother, Melanie.

Even so, Brittany says, "I still enjoy fishing with my father."

In fact, that was a follow-up question I asked both girls because I've asked the same one to my own daughter: "Do you find fishing too slow compared to the electronic entertainment available for kids your age now?"

They both agreed that computers are great, but so is fishing, and when asked if they would move closer to their friends to a more populated place (the Dashnaws live in an out-of-the-way section of Saranac toward Standish), they said emphatically, "No!"

While Brittany's future goal, for now, is to someday work in the field of conservation or as a veterinarian, her younger sister's main concern, besides fishing, is riding a small dirt bike on the family property.
