The nice weather and the good water levels of the streams have finally generated some excellent fly-fishing action.

Hatches of Hendricksons are beginning to come off along with a few Caddis. Add this to the fact that the West Branch of the Ausable has been stocked with many trout in the 15- to 17-inch range. A few 18- and 19-inch fish have already been taken and it can only get better.

Most fish are being taken on beadhead Hendrickson emergers, black beadhead crystal buggers, Haystack Hendricksons and black stonefly nymphs. The water temperature at the time of this report is around 45 degrees.

Don't forget the annual two-fly contest is on for this coming Saturday. You still have time to get in if you wish.

The dinner will be held Saturday night at the Hungry Trout and I am slated to be the guest speaker. The subject will be the history of the last 70 years of fishing on the Ausable along with some techniques to get best results, etc. If you plan on attending and don't wish to listen, just bring ear plugs.

The ponds have all opened and fish are being caught on Taylor Pond, Lake Placid, on streamers trolled behind a Lake Clear Wobbler. The pond and lake fishing should remain good on the surface for the next couple of weeks.
