Chazy students celebrate winter

CHAZY — Students at Chazy Central Rural School are eager to go back to school during their vacation, thanks to Winter Weekend.

The annual celebration started a little early this year, with the School Council adding a new event last weekend.

The students went to a rock-and-skate event last Saturday for skating and a pizza party and also enjoyed free giveaways during a hockey game.

The rock-and-skate was something new that organizers hoped the students would enjoy, Student Council President Michaela Cahoon said.

However, the real barrage of activity starts today and ends Saturday night.

“This event is unique to Chazy,” Cahoon said. “I expect the weekend to be full of fun. We don’t have homecoming, so students really look forward to the Winter Weekend.”

The event is also sponsored and organized by Chazy Lions Club. Winter Weekend Committee Chairman Jim Lucas, a Lions Club member, thinks it will be very enjoyable.

“The event has been going on for close to 50 years. It’s a unique event and a good time,” he said.

“You would think that students would not want anything to do with the school (during vacation). It’s amazing how many of them come.

“It is a lot of work on their part,” he added, “but they do it year after year. If they weren’t doing it, we wouldn’t be doing it. They continue to participate, and we continue to help them.”

Winter Weekend will start from 3 to 5 p.m. today with skating, food and hot chocolate for the students.

On Thursday, a talent show at the school will feature each class from the seventh to 12th grade putting on a 15-minute skit, starting at 6.30 p.m.

Friday, students from each class will compete in a volleyball tournament at the school gym at 6.30 p.m.
