---- — PERU — Like at Oak Street Elementary, students at Peru High School also use Valentine’s Day as an opportunity to honor veterans.
Members of Peru Central’s College for Every Student group recently made valentines that they hand delivered Tuesday to patients at the Albany Stratton Veterans Affairs Hospital.
In addition to the cards, the students brought gift bags filled with toiletries, sweets, crossword puzzles and patriotic car decals for the veterans.
Though this is the second year Peru Central students have journeyed to the hospital, it is the first time they have gone bearing gift bags.
Last year, according to Peru Middle and High School Counselor Susan Smith, the students said they felt awkward having only valentines to present to the veterans and wished they had more to offer them.
So this year, she said, the students asked people to donate items, which they gathered and used to fill the bags.
Smith added that the vets, many of whom are bedridden, seem to enjoy the students’ visits.
“I think they’re just really happy to be remembered and just to spend time with someone,” she said.
