College student charged with arson

PLATTSBURGH — A freshman at SUNY Plattsburgh faces multiple charges, including arson, following a fire on campus early Friday morning.

Matthew A. Fox, 18, was taken into custody following an investigation that alleges he intentionally set fire to a dryer in Wilson Hall, according to a statement from the University Police Department.

The Plattsburgh City Fire Department was called to the campus at about 3:30 a.m. after a fire alarm in the building was activated.

Upon their arrival, officers discovered a fire in a laundry dryer in the basement of the campus’s largest residence hall.

The building was evacuated as responders doused the flames and ventilated smoke from the building.

Police said no one was injured as a result of the fire.

Fox was charged with criminal mischief, a felony, and with fifth-degree arson, criminal mischief and reckless endangerment, all misdemeanors.

University Police is still looking for more information about the fire. Anyone with any additional information is asked to contact them at 564-2022.

And the department urges everyone to report any suspicious activities or people immediately.
