ST. REGIS FALLS — Taxes will go up 1 percent in the proposed 2014-15 budget at St. Regis Falls Central School.
And the school will no longer share its superintendent, Donna Andre, with Brushton-Moira Central School as part of next year’s strategy.
She will work full time in Brushton-Moira, rather than splitting her time between the two districts.
St. Regis Falls will contract with an interim superintendent until it can hire a new person.
The overall district budget in St. Regis Falls is $8,348,207, an increase of 7.57 percent from this year.
The tax levy, or amount to be raised by taxes, is up 1 percent to $2,665,166.
A public hearing is set for 6 tonight in the school auditorium.
The budget vote is from noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 20, in the school library.
Andre explained budget changes in a newsletter to district voters, saying two elementary teaches are retiring and would be replaced by people making less, which will save money.
A teaching assistant for Academic Intervention Services and an occupational-therapy assistant for special-needs students will be added.
But the contract for a 20-percent French teacher through the Board of Cooperative Educational Services will be eliminated.
The district will add three distance-learning courses for students next year: Bio-Ethics and Sign Language I and II.
PAYING OFF DEBT
Andre said another way to realize savings is the School Board’s decision to pay off the rest of a 2005 tax-overcharge challenge made by Bay Pond taxpayers.
The remaining $290,000 Certiorari debt will be paid with fund balance, saving about $79,000 in interest, she said.
The board will also apply $105,920 from that same fund to lower taxes in 2014-15.
SCHOOL BOARD SEATS
In addition to deciding on the annual financial plan, voters will be asked to select a School Board member to fill a five-year seat.
The candidates are Thomas O’Bryan and Stacey Mascia-Susice.
There is also a proposition on the ballot for purchase of an accessible, 60-passenger bus at a cost not to exceed $116,150.
