Master Teacher Program seeks applicants

PLATTSBURGH — North Country applicants are sought for the New York State Master Teacher Program at SUNY Plattsburgh.

Intended to enhance math- and science-technology education across the state, the four-year program kicks off this fall, aiming to provide top-notch secondary-school teachers with additional tools and knowledge they can pass on to their colleagues and students.

Between 50 and 60 Master Teacher Fellows will be chosen from the area to participate in peer mentoring and content-oriented professional development through SUNY Plattsburgh’s Education, Health and Human Services Department and the North Country Teacher Resource Center.

Fellows will also have access to educational resources through Clarkson University.

“I think that this gives our math and science teachers an opportunity to network with one another, share best practices and really have some targeted professional development around their content areas,” said Kathleen Fessette, director of the Teacher Resource Center.

AUG. 1 DEADLINE

Applicants must be certified and employed as educators in New York state, with a minimum of four years of teaching experience. They must also have a current course load of at least 60 percent math or science in grades six through 12.

Fellows will be expected to participate in monthly events throughout the year, including cohort meetings, professional development and training of pre-service and early career teachers.

In addition, fellows will receive a $15,000 stipend each of the four years of the program.

Applications, available at suny.edu/MasterTeacher, are due by 11:59 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 1.

Second-round candidates will be invited for interviews set for Monday, Aug. 19, and Tuesday, Aug. 20.

Master Teacher Fellows will be announced on Sunday, Sept. 1.
