---- — Two SUNY Plattsburgh students received top awards in a scientific research competition: Justin Andrews of Warrensburg and Mackenzie Kilkeary of Plattsburgh. Andrews, a junior earth and environmental science major, started working on a DNA database of the Lake Champlain basin frog population in the summer of 2011. He entered his work into the Society of College Science Teacher’s poster contest and placed first. Kilkeary worked to determine the sex of juvenile ancient Maya skeletons. He placed second in the poster contest. He will study in the forensic science graduate program at Marshall University in West Virginia.
Area students who were awarded bachelor’s degrees at the University of Vermont, Burlington, are: Jane F. McClelland of Keene Valley, nutrition and food sciences; Michael M. Clark of Lake Placid, history; Alice Robinson of Peru, professional nursing; Jordan L. Stepheny of Peru, dietetics nutrition and food sciences; Anders O. Franzon of Plattsburgh, civil engineering; Justin M. Houle of Plattsburgh, exercise and movement sciences; Joseph N. Shannawi of Plattsburgh, electrical engineering; Sarah M. Lake of Saranac, elementary education K-6; Michelle L. Brown of Saranac Lake, natural resources, Arielle N. Retrosi of Saranac Lake, global studies, Megan K. Ryan of West Chazy, athletic training education; Dana V. Allen of Westport, social work; and Sarah J. Gibbs of Westport, studio art.
Joshua Leblanc of Saranac Lake graduated from the University of New Haven in West Haven, Conn., with a master’s degree in industrial/organizational psychology.
Two local residents have been accepted into the Class of 2017 at Union College, Schenectady: Amy DeMane of Plattsburgh, a graduate of Plattsburgh High School, and Tucker West of Lake Placid, a graduate of National Sports Academy in Lake Placid.
Christopher T. Crain of Plattsburgh received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art and Design from the School of Art and Design at Alfred University. He is the son of Stephen and Elizabeth Crain of Plattsburgh and a graduate of Peru Central School. He was one of five doctoral degree recipients.
Two area students graduated from Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs. Jordan Keysor of Cadyville received a bachelor’s degree. Annelieke Rietsema of Plattsburgh, also received a bachelor’s degree, summa cum laude. Rietsema, who earned term honors for the spring semester, is the daughter of Wouter and Loretta Rietsema of Plattsburgh.
Louis Racette of Saranac, a computer engineering and psychology major at Clarkson University, Potsdam, graduated with honors from the University Honors Program. He graduated with great distinction and completed an honors thesis titled “Visualizing data in more than three dimensions.” He will begin a career with Proctor & Gamble in Cincinnati.
Coastal Carolina University, Conway, S.C., named Sara Adams of Mooers to the President’s Honors List. She is a major in health promotion. Jacquelyn Dubee of Saranac Lake, a sophomore, also was named to the President’s Honors List. She is an exercise and sport science major.
Mechelle Roy of Newcomb was named to the SUNY Adirondack (Queensbury) Presidents List for the spring semester. Full-time students who maintain 4.0 GPA for the semester are selected for the honor.
Renee Andre and Devin Gosselin have each been awarded $500 scholarships by the GP Community Federal Credit Union. Andre, who graduated from Saranac Central School, is the daughter of Daniel and Karen Andre of Cadyville. Gosselin, who graduated from Northeastern Clinton Central School, is the daughter of Chris and Kim Gosselin of Champlain.
