---- — Appreciation Day

CHAMPLAIN — On Saturday, Aug. 18, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Champlain Telephone Company will hold its annual Customer Appreciation Day in conjunction with the Champlain Town-Wide Garage Sale and Champlain Village Fest.

The employees of Champlain Telephone have donated gently-used garage sale items and will participate in the town-wide sale on that day. All proceeds from the day will be split evenly among the food shelves located in the Champlain Telephone service area, which includes Mooers, Mooers Forks, Altona, Champlain and Rouses Point. Attendees are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item to the event. Raffle tickets will be on sale throughout the day for a variety of prizes.

The festivities of the day will include a number of free events, including a performance by the Back Porch Band from noon to 2 pm. There will be food, music, a bounce house, face painting, bucket-truck rides and much more.

Fiber-splicing demonstrations will take place at 11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. Tours of the facility will be available throughout the day upon request. Customers will be invited to enter a drawing to win a 32-inch IP-compatible flat-screen television. There will be interactive displays showing Champlain Telephone’s newest products and services including DirecTV bundles and features, as well as what increased broadband speeds can do.

Business mixer

PLATTSBURGH — The North Country Chamber of Commerce invites area business people to Business After Hours on Thursday, Aug. 16, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at Clinton Community College.

TwinState and CCC are co-hosting this event on the second-floor veranda at the college. The event features an amazing view of Lake Champlain, complimentary hors d’oeuvres, a cash bar, networking and more. Everyone who attends will receive a goodie bag from the sponsors.

Business After Hours is an opportunity to expand business networks and is open to all chamber members and their employees. Future members are encouraged to contact the chamber for a special-guest pass. The fee is $3 with an advance reservation and $4 without. Photo contest

PLATTSBURGH — The Adirondack Coast Visitors Bureau, a division of the North Country Chamber of Commerce, launched its first ever Facebook photo contest titled “Then & Now” in June.

The photo contest will end Sept. 3, leaving only a month for photo submissions. The contest allows fans to share their memories of vacationing in Plattsburgh, on Lake Champlain and all along the Adirondack Coast. By “liking” the Adirondack Coast Facebook page, users can simply fill out the information on the “Then & Now” Sweepstakes form and submit an original photo, old or new, of their favorite Adirondack Coast memory into one of 12 categories including fishing, cycling, parks and beaches, paddling, boating and sailing, winter fun, fall foliage, history, golfing, hiking, scenics and vistas, and agriculture and farms (including orchards, maple and vineyards).

Each of the categories will have a winner at the end of the contest. The image with the most “likes” will win a prize specific to that category. Prize packages were provided by Mountain Riders Bike Shop, Kayak Shack, Shipwreck Schwenk’s Fishing Adventures, Valcour Processing Technology, Titus Mountain Family Ski Center, Holiday Inn Express, Mo’s Family Restaurant, The View at Mirror Lake Inn, Legend’s Bistro& Wine Bar, Battle of Plattsburgh Weekend Commemoration Committee, Bluff Point Golf Resort, Harmony Golf Club & Community, Amazing Grace Vineyard, The Champlain Wine Co., Hid-in Pines Vineyard, Elf’s Winery & Cidermill, La Quinta Inn and Suites, Anne Porter and Associates and Ausable Chasm. The contest will also have one grand-prize winner. The image with the most “likes,” regardless of category, will receive a two-night stay at the Normandie Beach Club for four people plus a powerboat guided tour of Lake Champlain.

The contest invites fans to remember their time on the Adirondack Coast while reminding them of all the experiences that can be found throughout the area. There have already been 40 submissions to the contest.

Patient safety

SARANAC LAKE — An additional level of protection has been added to further enhance patient safety for people receiving care at Adirondack Medical Center.

All staff are held to the highest of standards to provide a clean and safe environment to protect patients against hospital-acquired infections. The data demonstrates the infection rates at AMC are consistently lower than other similarly sized facilities in the state and nation. And while the rates at AMC are lower, the objective is to continually strive for an infection rate of zero.

To that end, AMC has implemented a cleaning verification and monitoring system.

The system involves the use of a stylus roughly the size of a small marker to take a surface sample from a frequently touched area, such as a door knob or tray table. The stylus is then placed in a hand-held scanning device to verify how well the surface has been cleaned. The information is then stored in a database and tracked over time. The data validates the practices followed by the environmental services team by confirming the cleanliness of an area. The results also show opportunities for improvement.

When a patient comes to AMC for a surgical procedure or to recover from an illness, a clean and safe room is as important as regular visits from the nurse or doctor.

The environmental services team at AMC is a highly trained group of individuals who play a key role in the recovery of patients. Every time a patient is discharged from the Medical Center, the environmental services team thoroughly sanitizes the room. This is in addition to the assigned cleaning tasks conducted daily for the duration of the patient’s stay.

To prepare the room for the next patient, an intense cleaning takes place. This involves fresh linens, cleaning the floor, windows and all frequently touched surfaces such as door knobs, bed rails and tray tops. The cleaning-verification system is an additional best practice in the cleaning process to ensure all areas at AMC are safe as possible for the next patient, their family and visitors.
