---- — LAKE PLACID — Suspects in larcenies at two stores here are being sought by police, and authorities are asking the public to help.
Both crimes took place on Sept. 27, but authorities don’t know if they are connected.
The first happened at about 1:30 p.m. that day at Adirondack Decorative Arts and Crafts store near Starbucks, Police Sgt. Chuck Dobson said.
Police suspect a white male about 6-foot-2-inches tall distracted a sales clerk while another person slipped behind a counter and snatched up about 24 pieces of jewelry.
Dobson said the person of interest is also described as being in his late 20s with short blond hair and chin-strap-style facial hair. The man was wearing a white T-shirt and blue jeans.
Police wouldn’t say whether they have security camera images to work with. But there have been several leads in the case.
The alleged thief took some $4,500 worth of jewelry that afternoon.
“We are working with a possible theory of the crime,” Dobson said.
Among the items were a diamond solitaire ring, jeweled rings, two sets of cuff links and about five sets of brooches.
The second larceny, at about 3:30 p.m., took place at Placid Planet Bicycle on Saranac Avenue.
A Latina woman, police said, allegedly distracted employees while two men, also Latino, stole a Trek Speed Concept road bike. They also replaced the stolen bicycle with another one, the release said, trying to camouflage the theft. These persons of interest are in their late 20s or early 30s, Dobson said.
Authorities are asking anyone with information about the identity of the suspects, the stolen items or who might have surveillance video in a store that might have captured images of them to call Lake Placid Police at 523-3306.
