St. Lawrence County woman wins $2M in lottery

OGDENSBURG — Joyce Wood, 74, of Hammond in St. Lawrence County won a $2 million Powerball prize from the May 22, 2013, drawing.

“I went to the drug store to buy Tylenol for my husband and saw that the Powerball jackpot was $40 million,” she said in a press release. “So I bought five sets of Quick Pick numbers with the Power Play option on the day before the drawing.

“The next day, I check my numbers online, and that’s when I knew I had won big.”

Wood said her winnings are not going to change her life.

“I’m just going to enjoy life and spend it with my family.”

She bought her Powerball ticket at Kinney Drugs at 700 Canton Street in Ogdensburg. She claimed her prize on May 23 at the Lottery’s Syracuse Customer Service Center.

Wood will receive the $2 million in one lump sum totaling $1,323,600 after required withholdings.

The New York Lottery contributed $25,176,155.37 in Lottery Aid to Education to school districts throughout St. Lawrence County during fiscal year 2012-13.
