25 YEARS AGO – 1987
▶ Nearly 100 people are now involved in the search for Kari Lynn Nixon, the 16-year-old AuSable Forks girl who has been missing for three days. State Police and Bureau of Criminal Investigation officers were joined in the search on Thursday by forest rangers from the Department of Environmental Conservation, members of the State Police mounted patrol unit, a K-9 unit and a police helicopter.
▶ An explosion and flash fire on a 30-foot sailboat injured three Montreal men, two of them critically, at Lighthouse Point Marina in Rouses Point. Both were in intensive care Wednesday night.
▶ “The holes in the smile of downtown Malone” need to be filled in, according to the architect hired by the village to develop a comprehensive development plan for the central business district. Paul Soper, the Syracuse architect who is developing the plan, told Office of Community Development Director Scott Murtagh on Monday that one of the first things the village needs to do is fill in the vacant spaces along Main Street with some sort of landscaping.
▶ The Village of Rouses Point is trying to get a $100,000 grant to install a concrete floor in the Rouses Point Recreation Center for the 1989 hockey season. With a concrete floor, the center could be used year-round.
50 YEARS AGO – 1962
▶ Plans for a new $1 million department store to serve the Plattsburgh area were disclosed Sunday by Giant Key Corporation of Lynn, Mass. Giant Key next month will begin construction of an 89,000-square-foot store at North Country Shopping Center on Route 9.
* A team of engineers moved into Essex County this week to begin inspection of about 33 county buildings as possible fallout shelter sites. Buildings to be inspected have already met established government requirements for protection against radioactive fallout.
▶ Evalon A. Merritt, Plattsburgh City School District superintendent of schools, said Monday that the Supreme Court ruling against classroom prayer would indicate that the observance would be discontinued here in Plattsburgh. The prayer recommended by the State Regents has been used in city schools for years, he said.
