WILMINGTON — A fatal skiing accident at Whiteface Mountain took the life of a Long Island visitor Friday morning.
Daniel M. McGovern was skiing with relatives on the Excelsior trail on the mountain at around 10:30 a.m. when he lost control, exited the trail and collided with several trees, according to a State Police press release.
Police reported that McGovern was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.
He was found about 30 feet from the trail, in a wooded area. Whiteface Ski Patrol and emergency medical technicians responded and administered emergency lifesaving measures but were unsuccessful.
McGovern, 25, was a resident of Carle Place, a hamlet of Nassau County.
Essex County Coroner Kelly Valentine authorized the removal of his body to Adirondack Medical Center for an autopsy.
His death remains under investigation by State Police.
Jon Lundin, director of communications at the Olympic Regional Development Authority, confirmed the news and investigation for the Press Republican, saying, "A 25-year-old man did suffer a fatal accident at Whiteface ... Our hearts and our sympathy go out to the family."
