Man indicted for allegedly shooting wife in hand

SARANAC LAKE — A Saranac Lake man accused of shooting his wife in the hand during a struggle in front of their three small children pleaded not guilty in Franklin County Court.

Oleg Tchernytchenko, 35, of McClelland Street was indicted by a grand jury on charges of first-degree assault, first-degree reckless endangerment and endangering the welfare of a child.

Police said Tchernytchenko called 911 at 1:50 a.m. Feb. 27 to report that his wife had a head injury. But rescue workers were met at the door by the woman, who had been shot in the hand, officers said.

She was taken to Adirondack Medical Center and transferred to Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington for treatment.

The children, ages 5 months to 4 years old, were taken into custody by County Department of Social Services Child Protective Services personnel.

Two of the kids were on the couch with their mother when she was allegedly shot while struggling with her husband for control of the gun. He had been drinking that day, police said.

Following arraignment Monday, Tchernytchenko was taken to County Jail in lieu of $50,000 cash bail or $100,000 insurance bond.

He is scheduled to reappear in court Thursday, Aug. 8.
