PLATTSBURGH — A Bombay man was charged with grand larceny after police said he led them on a chase in the second of two stolen vehicles.
Shawn D. Schreier, 21, was charged with two counts of fourth-degree grand larceny, a felony, as well as unlawfully fleeing a police officer, resisting arrest, unlawful possession of marijuana and numerous violations of the State Vehicle and Traffic Law.
On Monday, Massena-based State Police were investigating a report of a stolen vehicle when they found a 2002 Dodge Caravan and a utility trailer demolished off County Route 53 in Helena, according to a news release from State Police.
The driver had fled the area, State Police said in the release.
Then, State Police dispatchers in Canton received a report of a stolen 1996 Chevrolet pickup truck that had gone missing from State Route 420 in Massena.
Troopers found the pickup heading southbound on Route 420 and attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver didn’t pull over and continued driving south for about 4 miles, until the pickup struck a curb, puncturing one of its tires, police said.
Police determined that Schreier, earlier, had been driving the Dodge Caravan south on Route 53 when it veered off the east shoulder of the road, striking numerous small trees and overturning, police said.
The minivan came to rest on the edge of the St. Regis River, police said.
Schreier was arraigned in Norfolk Town Court and was sent to the St. Lawrence County Jail in lieu of $5,000 cash or $10,000 bond.
