Certification earned

PLATTSBURGH — Local dog trainer Deborah Jay DeSilva, CPDT-KA, of Canine Adventure LLC in Plattsburgh, recently completed the requirements for the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers.

She received her international certification after completing more than 300 hours of handler/dog-training experience and a rigorous four-hour psychometrically sound and science-based comprehensive exam testing her knowledge of learning theory, ethology, instructional skills, animal husbandry, ethics and equipment.

This exam was developed by a task force of approximately 20 internationally known dog-training professionals and animal behaviorists who worked for three years in researching and developing this comprehensive examination. Professional Testing Corporation (PTC) administers the exam to ensure the process meets professional testing standards. Candidates who pass the exam earn the title Certified Professional Dog Trainer — Knowledge Assessed and may use the designation CPDT-KA after their names. All certified trainers must earn continuing-education credits to maintain their designation or take the examination again in three years.

DeSilva is the only Certified Professional Dog Trainer in New York within a 125-mile radius of Plattsburgh. She provides small-group classes, private training, behavior assessments and consultations serving Clinton, Essex and Franklin counties. She has been a communications professor at SUNY Plattsburgh since 1990 and is the president of the Clinton County Canine Club.

For training, assessment and consultations, contact Canine Adventure at 562-0552, or DeSilva directly at 293-7619.
