Camp Gabriels sold to private buyer

777

BRIGHTON — The shuttered Camp Gabriels prison sold for $210,777 at a state auction Tuesday morning.

The winning bid conveys the property to Mohammad Ibrahim of Elmont, according to the State Office of General Services.

Seven bids were submitted, OGS spokeswoman Heather Groll said.

The lower bids were Adam Fine for $166,000; Ronald T. Fina for $122,001; Adrien N. Vlach for $121,250; Northeast Concrete Coring and Cutting Inc. for $121,000; Wooden Boat LLC for $120,000; and Richard Williams for $91,117.

Some of the unsuccessful bids came from local and regional interests: Northeast Concrete Coring and Cutting is a firm based in Canton, and Ronald Fina is a resident of Saranac Lake.

Closure on the sale brings an end to state ownership of the 91-acre property that made up Camp Gabriels Correctional Facility, a minimum security prison with 55 structures, including a heating plant, a gymnasium and a historic chapel. The property was settled in 1897 as a sanitarium by the Sisters of Mercy Order for patients curing from tuberculosis.

Camp Gabriels was closed in July 2009 due to state budget cuts.

Groll said the minimum bid for the facility was set by the state at $90,000, about 10 percent of the $950,000 the state hoped to sell the property for in 2009.

The sealed bids were opened at 11 a.m.

“It certainly has been a struggle to sell the property,” Assemblywoman Janet Duprey said on Tuesday.

“To get it on the tax base for the Town of Brighton and Franklin County is important. Until we know what the plans are, it will be interesting to see what unfolds.”

The land is subject to land-use regulation by the Adirondack Park Agency, which had classified it as State Administrative when the prison was built.

Town of Brighton Supervisor Peter Shrope could not be reached Tuesday for comment.
