Westport Health Center renovation nears completion

WESTPORT — A massive renovation and building project has transformed the Westport Health Clinic.

The expansion includes a large waiting room, seven exam rooms, office space for physicians, a more private registration area, nurses work station, lab area, procedure room and patient consultation room.

“The physician, physician assistant and staff didn’t take any time off to facilitate the move, Elizabethtown Community Hospital Chief Operating Officer Matt Nolan said in an email. “It was pretty impressive.

“We expected a very smooth transition, and that’s exactly what happened.”

The Health Center operates under the auspices of the hospital.

Throughout the construction and renovations, Nolan said, “patients were able to meet with their primary-care provider throughout the construction process and, even on the day that staff transitioned into the new portion of the building, the Health Center was still in business.

AMBULANCE BAY

The construction project took place in two phases.

Initially, the Health Center underwent a 3,700-square-foot expansion, while the second phase has included renovation of the existing 2,000-square-foot building.

The old part now includes a conference room, staff meeting space, storage and office space.

There are also spaces for the building’s heating and cooling system, along with communications infrastructure needed to support electronic-medical-record technology and fiber-optic connectivity.

And there is an ambulance bay.

In addition, the clinic features all new equipment and furniture, as well as a brighter, more spacious atmosphere.

“I’m extremely pleased with the project, and I have no doubt that patients will be very happy with the enhancements and increased space,” Nolan said.

“The appearance of the new portion of the building reflects the stonework and character of the older portion. Maintaining its character was an important factor in the building’s redesign.”

NYS HEAL FUNDING

“This facility has the same look and feel as ECH,” said Jane Hooper, director of community relations at ECH. “The old clinic had been in desperate need of an upgrade.”

The initial structure had been a service station and convenience store in its past life.

The $2.2 million in funding for the work came primarily through a NYS HEAL grant.

In addition to the Westport Health Center, ECH has three other community-based clinics, located in Willsboro, Wilmington and Elizabethtown.
