Lake Placid Book Club meets Monday

LAKE PLACID — The Lake Placid Institute Book Club, a group that focuses on works about the arts, begins its sixth season at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 30, at the Lake Placid Public Library, 2471 Main St.

The selection for the month will be “The Art Forger,” by B.A. Shapiro. The bestselling novel is about a Boston painter who enters into a dangerous bargain with an art dealer to forge a Degas that was stolen in the infamous Isabella Stewart Gardner art heist.

All are invited to listen or participate in the discussion. The event is free, with no residency restrictions.

Word Thursdays series returns

PLATTSBURGH — A Feinberg Library series featuring local writers will return to the SUNY Plattsburgh campus starting Thursday, Oct. 3.

The series, Word Thursdays, has writers reading from their published works and leading conversations about poetry and fiction. All events take place in the Reading Room of Feinberg Library and are free and open to the public. At the end of each event, audience members are invited to read from their own works in an open mic session. Refreshments will be served.

The schedule is: student poetry reading, 5 p.m. Oct. 3; Elizabeth Cohen, reading from “What the Trees Said” and “The Hypothetical Girl,” 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 10; Kristin Kimball, author of “The Dirty Life,” 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17; Kate Moses, reading from “Cakewalk,” “Wintering” and “Mothers Who Think,” 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24; and a community poetry reading of Dante’s “Inferno,” 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 31.

Pearsall to share about new book

PLATTSBURGH — Plattsburgh Public Library is hosting a book talk and signing with author Glenn Pearsall, who will speak about his new book, “When Men and Mountains Meet,” from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5.

The book is an exploration of the early cultural history of the Adirondacks.
