Two arrested in sex-offender checks

---- — MALONE — Two sex offenders who allegedly failed to comply with the state’s Sex Offender Registry regulations were arrested in Franklin County.

Sheriff Kevin Mulverhill said during Operation Safe September, his deputies and other law-enforcement agents checked on all registered sex offenders except those inmates in the area’s four state prisons or those at Sunmount Developmental Disability Services in Tupper Lake.

The sheriff said of the 111 compliance checks made, two people were charged.

Howard Patell, 29, of 215 Elm St., Apt. 4C, Malone, and Gerald Dudley, 42, of 3 County Route 38, Constable, were each charged with failure to update their address with the sex-offender registry within 10 days of moving.

They were sent to County Jail without bail to await further court action.

A third person is being investigated by U.S. Marshals, which also provided more than $2,000 toward overtime costs for the operation, Mulverhill said.

“With the onset of the new school year, it is important that the public feels confident that our children are safe from sexual predators and that our law-enforcement agencies are doing everything they can to track down registered sex offenders and make sure they are complying with the law,” he said in a news release.

Assisting were the County District Attorney’s Office, U.S. Marshals, the Parole Division of the State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, St. Regis Mohawk Tribal Police and the Malone, Saranac Lake and Tupper Lake village police departments.
