Show tonight in Rouses Point

ROUSES POINT — Opera singer Scott Merchant has returned home to bring a variety of musical genres to the North Country once again.

The Rouses Point native is scheduled to perform opera, jazz and modern tunes at the Samuel de Champlain Center Stage on the grounds of the Rouses Point Recreation Center at 6:30 p.m. today. The act is part of the stage’s Summer Concert Series, which normally takes place on Thursdays.

His father, Steve Merchant, said the performance was rescheduled because Scott could not make it otherwise.

Sharing the stage will be Broadway singer Terra Salazar and, also of Rouses Point, folksinger Laura Capito.

Attendants are recommended to bring blankets or chairs to sit on, Steve said.

Refreshments including chips and candy bars will be sold to benefit the Rouses Point Fire Department Auxiliary.

Scott has performed around the world, including places such as England, Italy and France, and he sings in languages native to those countries.

Music has been his passion since he was just 3 years old and his grandmother taught him to play piano. A student at Northeastern Clinton Central School, he performed in school musicals, including the role of Professor Henry Higgens in “My Fair Lady.” But a trip to an opera in Montreal convinced him to seek the professional route, Steve said.

“When he came back, he told his music teacher, ‘This is how I want to sing.”

Scott attended Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam and the Montreal Conservatory before receiving a scholarship to study at the Lamont School of Music at the University of Denver. After graduation, he remained in Denver, where he currently works with a vocal studio, his father said.

In 2009, Steve and his wife, Sue, were part of a committee that used grant funding for the construction of the Rouses Point stage, a dream of Scott’s for a long time.

The final show of the summer series will take place Thursday at 6:30 p.m., featuring the Backporch Band.
