Meeting set to discuss Champlain dissolution

---- — CHAMPLAIN — The Village of Champlain will hold a meeting to further review the dissolution process 6:30 p.m. March 7 at the Town of Champlain Office Complex, 729 Route 9.

Wade Beltramo of the New York Conference of Mayors will answer questions at the session, which is the second meeting held to investigate the process and the ramifications should the Village of Champlain be dissolved.

A “yes” vote at a public referendum set for March 19 would set the ball rolling on a dissolution study and plan. Once those were in place, residents would have the option to circulate a petition that would force another public vote; otherwise, the clock for dissolving village government would start ticking.

If the public votes “no” on March 19, dissolution can’t be revisited again for four years.

The March 7 meeting will be held at the town offices in order to accommodate larger attendance.

In recent months, voters in two other villages have weighed in on dissolution.

In Malone, the vote was 1,117 to 562 against dissolving.

In Keeseville, dissolution was approved by a vote of 268 to 176. The Village Board has begun work on a finalized plan to make that happen.
