Fairfield Inn and Suites approval extended

PLATTSBURGH — A plan for a Fairfield Inn and Suites hotel appears to finally be moving forward.

At the Town of Plattsburgh Planning Board meeting Tuesday night, Holiday Inn Manager Sam Sheni — representing project applicant Route 3 Development LLC — said they are very close to securing financing and anticipate the project will go forward this year.

And so the Planning Board approved a second one-year extension to the plan it initially OK’d in October 2010. 

“We are still working with the bank,” Sheni said after he met with the board. “We should know by the end of this month whether we will be able to do it or not.”

HEIGHT VARIANCE

The 91-room, four-story hotel would be located on Route 3 across from Hampton Inn and Suites. The site is served by town water and sewer.

Plans call for 104 parking spaces. There would be a swimming pool on the north end of the ground floor. 

The project received a height variance from the town’s Zoning Board of Appeals that is set to expire in May.

The main hotel entrance would be located on the east side of the building. There would be driveway entrances on the east and west sides.

The exterior would feature a brick veneer on the lower level and siding above that. The roof would be covered with architectural shingles.

BIGGER PICTURE

Town Supervisor Bernie Bassett said it was exciting to hear the project appears ready to move forward. 

“A lot of travelers want to go to a hotel that is part of the Hilton and Marriott chain,and now we’ll have both,” he said, noting Hampton Inn is part of the Hilton chain.

The hotel would add to the Clinton County bed-tax collections used to help market the region. It would also contribute to county sales-tax totals, which helps defray the costs of services provided by the town, Bassett said.
