---- — PLATTSBURGH — Christmas lights have been steadily popping up as homeowners decorate to celebrate the holiday season.

The custom started in 18th century Germany when candles where used to decorate Christmas trees in upper-class homes.

Electric lights on trees became popular in the early 20th century, and by the mid-20th century, the bright decor made its way to the outside of buildings and streets.

In the 1960s, outlining private homes with colorful Christmas lights became the trend.

This year, as you drive around the region to enjoy some festive decorations, think about the history of illumination. A tradition that started out with just a few candles on a tree has turned into fully adorned front-yard scenes.
