JAY — A little boy missing in AuSable Acres here earlier Tuesday is back in the arms of his dad.
Robert Wainwright and Virginia Servilio, who own a vacation home in the development at 198 River Road, found Matthew Terry, 2, more than an hour after he wandered away from his own home at 41 Elm St. a little before 2:40 p.m.
Searchers, including State Police, firefighters, EMS responders, the Essex County Sheriff's Department and State Department of Environmental Conservation officers, had combed the area, a community of homes on large, tree-filled lots.
Clinton County Fire Control dispatched calls asking for assistance for Essex County at about 2:50 p.m.
The report said they were searching in the area of the pond at AuSable Acres.
Matthew had been in the care of his mother, Jolene Kearns, girlfriend of the toddler’s father, who is also named Matthew Terry. She said she was about to put the boy down for a nap and couldn’t find him.
She immediately called 911, and the search ensued.
Hampering rescuers was the fact that little Matthew was dressed all in black, a color not easily spotted in the woods on a gloomy, rainy day.
Tears were shed as the senior Terry enfolded the boy in a hug. Little Matthew was unharmed, though he had lost a shoe.
Helping with the search was Jay Volunteer Fire Department with mutual aid from departments in Upper Jay, Wilmington and AuSable Forks; AuSable EMS also assisted.
