HomeGoods store to open Sunday

PLATTSBURGH — The HomeGoods store in Consumer Square will open Sunday.

“We’ve been in anticipation of this day for quite some time,” said Plattsburgh Town Supervisor Bernie Bassett. “This is one more good reason for people to come into town and spend some time.”

He said it also shows Plattsburgh remains a growing and attractive market.

HomeGoods bills itself as an off-price home-fashions store that stocks a large selection of high-quality, unique home fashions. That includes brand- and designer-name merchandise at prices that are often 20 to 60 percent less than in catalogs, specialty shops and department stores.

The stores usually have about 40,000 items in stock at any time. Product types include home decor, decorative accents, tableware, gourmet kitchen products, bedding, bath, children’s, home-office and seasonal items.

The store hosted a special preview event for card holders from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, which brought out many shoppers.

HomeGoods is part of Massachusetts-based TJX Companies. Its other stores include T.J. Maxx and Marshalls in the United States; Winners, HomeSense, Marshalls and Stylesense in Canada; and T.J. Maxx and HomeSense in Europe.

A T.J. Maxx is located in the same strip as the new HomeGoods store, off Route 3. The new store is approximately 24,000 square feet in the southwest corner of the plaza.

That part of the plaza was renovated in 2010-11 to raise the storefronts and bring parking closer.

Phil Tracey of the TJX Public Relations Department told the Press-Republican in June that the company usually has about 60 full-time and part-time associates at each store.

HomeGoods began in 1992. There were 374 stores as of the end of 2011.
