Letter Carriers Food Drive set for Saturday

PLATTSBURGH — The National Association of Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive is Saturday, and residents are encouraged to set nonperishable foods near their mailbox in advance of the time their mail is delivered.

Suggested foods include canned soup and vegetables, pasta, rice or cereal; glass items cannot be accepted.

Price Chopper, a new partner in the effort this year, provided specially marked bags for addresses in parts of upstate New York, Vermont and other locations.

Now in its 21st year, the Stamp Out Hunger food drive is the nation’s largest single-day food drive, having collected more than one billion pounds of food since its inception in 1993. In 2012, Americans donated more than 70 million pounds of food, which marked the ninth consecutive year that at least that much was collected.

Donations are delivered to nearby food pantries, food banks and shelters.
