Many volunteer for Day of Caring

PLATTSBURGH — More than 475 volunteers have signed on for the third-annual Day of Caring.

More than 75 projects are planned throughout Clinton, Essex and Franklin counties, United Way Director of Development Kathy Snow said.

“The Day of Caring is very special,” she said.

The event, set for Saturday, is a partnership among the United Way of the Adirondack Region, the North Country Regional Volunteer Center, Project HELP at SUNY Plattsburgh and the Adirondack Coast Visitors Bureau.

Georgia-Pacific Operations Manager Tim Boshart said this is the third year a crew from the company plans to pitch in.

They have been able to completely Sheetrock a Habitat for Humanity home in each of the past two years, which gives them a great sense of pride.

“The people who participate benefit as much as the people we help,” he said.

‘MAKES ME PROUD’

Vikki Schiebel, Day of Caring coordinator for Project HELP at SUNY Plattsburgh, said more than 400 students will be participating.

It’s a great way for them to show they do give back to the community, she said.

Michael Cashman, coordinator for student activities and volunteerism at SUNY Plattsburgh, said the Day of Caring provides a full spectrum of community service.

“This is an opportunity for you to build and nourish this community,” he said.

United Way Outreach Coordinator Larry Pickreign said the Day of Caring brings together businesses and community members to support their neighbors and nonprofits.

“It’s not just for one person, one community,” he said. “It really makes me proud to be a member of this community.”

‘PRICELESS’

Last year, the Adirondack Coast Visitors Bureau helped coordinate efforts to bring a group of SUNY Plattsburgh students to Ausable Chasm to help clean up damage left from the remnants of Tropical Storm Irene, said Marketing and Communications Assistant Amber Parliament.
