---- — Common Council agenda set

PLATTSBURGH — The City of Plattsburgh Common Council will review several items on their agenda at tonight’s meeting.

Among them are a request to approve a change order for $2,600 for a home-improvement project at 27 St. John’s St. and a request from the Community Development Office to advertise for bids for housing rehabilitation at 10 Kim Court.

The meeting begins with a work session at 5 p.m., followed by the regular meeting at 5:30 p.m.

Both meetings are open to the public.

Vision2Action to address value of education

PLATTSBURGH — Mountain Lake PBS will broadcast a roundtable discussion on the cradle-through-career approach to education at 8 p.m.

Thom Hallock, host of “Mountain Lake Journal,” will talk with Clinton Community College President John Jablonski and The Development Corp. President Paul Grasso about how education is related to economic prosperity and a sustainable quality of life in a community.

The event is part of the Partnership for Community Development’s Vision2Action series. Next, a panel discussion will be open to the public at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, at Clinton Community College.

The main topic will be Clinton County THRIVE, a community-based public/private partnership dedicated to increased education attainment by leveraging the various resources in the area so people can learn from birth through the end of a career.

The education series wraps up with a live edition of “Mountain Lake Journal” at 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25. That live call-in show is also dedicated to the importance of education to a community’s economic well-being.

City School Board to meet Thursday

PLATTSBURGH — The Plattsburgh City School Board will meet at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Duken School building. 

At the session, the board will recognize the German American Partnership program. It will also act on miscellaneous personnel and business items.

Champlain session to focus on playground

CHAMPLAIN — The Village of Champlain Playground Committee will hold an organizational meeting at 6 p.m. Friday at the Village Office, 1104 Route 9. 

The purpose of the session is to discuss plans for the proposed playground and fundraising activities. All are welcome to attend and share their ideas for the community project.

Public welcome at Lyon Mountain Fire District meeting

LYON MOUNTAIN — The Lyon Mountain Fire District will hold a meeting on its proposed 2013 budget at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, at the Lyon Mountain Fire House at 9 Fire House Road.

Training set for Literacy Volunteers

PORT HENRY — Literacy Volunteers of Essex/Franklin Counties will host a tutor training for prospective volunteers from 1 to 4 p.m. on Oct. 18, 23, 25 and 30 at its main office in Port Henry. 

The 12-hour basic literacy training will give the tools, tips, and strategies needed to help a student learn how to read, improve literacy skills or obtain a high school equivalency diploma.

Monitoring of sex offenders to step up on Halloween

PLATTSBURGH — New York State parole officers will monitor registered sex offenders on Halloween to help protect children and the community during trick-or-treating.

They will conduct face-to-face home visits with sex offenders to enforce the special Halloween conditions of parole set by the State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision for individuals under supervision for a sex offense. 

Offenders must remain at home or in designated locations, not answer the door to trick-or-treaters and can’t have Halloween candy in their possession or dress in a costume.
