Malone festival marks milestones

MALONE — A Family Fun Festival and Parade on Saturday, July 6, will celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Malone Volunteer Fire Department and other local milestones.

In addition to the Fire Department’s highlight year, several other organizations in the Town of Malone have reason to celebrate in 2013. It is the 100th anniversary of Alice Hyde Medical Center and Malone Elks Lodge, the 80th anniversary of Wead Library, the 65th anniversary of Yando’s Big M Supermarket and the 50th anniversary of SeaComm Federal Credit Union.

Members of the Malone Chamber of Commerce felt a festival would be a perfect way to honor all of the organizations, it is sponsoring Saturday’s events.

STARTS WITH PARADE

The parade will begin on Main Street at 10 a.m. Saturday and continue to Arsenal Green Park, where the festival will be held until 6 p.m.

A variety of vendors will set up at the park, along with carnival games, a farmers market, refreshments, a business expo and family entertainment.

Wead Library will also be having a book giveaway at the Arsenal Green Park, and a Sidewalk Sale will be going on throughout Main Street during the day.

With so many activities planned, Chamber Executive Director Hugh Hill hopes to have a large crowd on hand for the free festival.

“This event in the park is going to be huge,” he said. “There’s going to be so much to do, and there is entertainment for children.”

The Chamber Events Committee said the Sidewalk Sale, which used to take place in Malone on a regular basis, is a good way to promote local business and attract people into the community.

“It gives you a reason for taking a walk,” Hill said. “There’s going to be a lot of people, we think, watching the parade anyway. So, it (the sale) will be good for business, and it will be fun.”
