Staley sentencing delayed until Friday, Jan. 24

PLATTSBURGH — Tammy Staley’s sentencing for animal cruelty charges, set for Friday, was adjourned until Jan. 24.

She pleaded guilty in November to five counts of animal cruelty, a misdemeanor.

Staley was originally charged with 20 counts of the crime in July after an unannounced inspection of her Plattsburgh pet shop, Northern Puppies, uncovered a dead kitten and several other animals in poor health.

Then, in August, Michael Staley faked a burglary at his wife’s store, taking the 24 puppies that were there. He left them in locations around Clinton County and later pleaded guilty to five counts of animal abandonment.

Both Mr. and Mrs. Staley will be sentenced in Plattsburgh City Court. Mrs. Staley’s sentencing is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Jan. 24, and Mr. Staley’s is tentatively set for 8:30 a.m. Jan. 23.

AMC restricts visitation to birthing center due to flu

SARANAC LAKE — Adirondack Health is taking precautions to protect newborns from the recent local increase in flu and flu-like illnesses by restricting visitors to the Stafford New Life birthing center at Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake.

“Babies are among the highest at-risk group for complications from the flu,” a press release said. “For their protection, only parents and grandparents who have received the flu vaccine are being allowed to visit the birthing center.”

Anyone with symptoms of illness is asked to stay away from the center.

There are no other visitor restrictions at AMC, the release said, but those with a cough may be asked to wear a mask in certain areas of the hospital or in a doctor’s office.

To arrange a flu shot or an appointment with a primary-care physician, call 897-2778 to make arrangements at one of Adirondack Health’s community health centers, located in Keene, Lake Placid, Saranac Lake and Tupper Lake. For more information, go to owww.AdirondackHealth.org.
