Embezzler’s sentencing delayed again
ELIZABETHTOWN — Sentencing for a Mineville woman who admitted she embezzled thousands of dollars from her employer has been postponed again.
Meagan M. Whitman, 29, was due in Essex County Court on Friday to be sentenced for felony fourth-degree grand larceny, but the proceeding was postponed with no new date set.
She pleaded guilty in March, but two sentencing delays have been caused by lack of agreement on the exact amount of restitution she owes.
Whitman admits taking $36,000, but the owners of Bryant’s Lumber in Moriah, where she’d been employed as a bookkeeper, believe the total is closer to $50,000.
State Police said an investigation showed Whitman took cash and materials from the lumber yard between August 2008 and March 2010.
County Judge Richard Meyer plans to hold a restitution hearing before sentencing Whitman, who is currently incarcerated in the Essex County Jail.
She agreed to a plea that has her spend six months in the Essex County Jail and five years on probation.
