Champlain garage destroyed, home damaged by fire

CHAMPLAIN — Smoke and water damaged the home at 313 Route 276 here Tuesday evening, but firefighters were quick to respond before the flames moved too far into the residence.

“The garage was fully involved when we pulled on scene,” Champlain Volunteer Fire Department Second Assistant Chief Walter Lapan said.

“The fire spread to the house, but we contained it.”

No one was home when the fire started; a neighbor across the street reported the blaze, Lapan said.

Clinton County Dispatch summoned the Champlain fire company along with a Tanker Task Force shortly before 5:30 p.m., describing the emergency as a “working, residential structure fire.”

Lapan didn’t know who lived in the home, which is located north of the Prospect Road intersection heading toward the Quebec border.

According to Clinton County Real Property records, it is owned by Michael, James, John and Martin McCarthy.

Mutual Aid turned out from all directions, with departments responding from Altona, Chazy, Mooers, Rouses Point, Alburgh, Vt.; Isle LaMotte, Vt.; Hemmingford, Quebec; St. Paul, Quebec; and Lacolle, Quebec.

Lapan didn’t yet know just how bad the damage to the house was, but, he said, “we saved some pictures for them.”

Firefighters were still at the property at 9 p.m.; no further information was available at that time.
