---- — LYON MOUNTAIN — A fire destroyed a single-family log cabin home here Saturday night.
Lyon Mountain Volunteer Fire Department responded to report of the blaze at 33 Power House Road shortly after 5 p.m. and arrived to find the structure fully involved in flames.
Mutual aid was immediately requested and received from Dannemora, Saranac and Ellenburg Center volunteer fire departments. Plattsburgh Air also provided assistance at the scene.
No one was injured in the fire, which was reported by a neighbor; however, four dogs perished in the blaze.
The small, two-story house was completely gutted by the flames and is a total loss, according to Jeff Greene, fourth assistant chief of the Lyon Mountain Volunteer Fire Department.
“It’s completely destroyed,” he said.
The fire originated in an addition off the side of the home, according to Greene, and it is believed to have been caused by a wood stove.
Firefighters remained at the scene fighting the blaze until 11 p.m. and were called back to the home at 12:15 a.m. Sunday to extinguish rekindling flames.
Though the fire department was back in service by 1 a.m., a second rekindle was reported at the location at 8 a.m. Sunday morning.
Greene said Lyon Mountain and Dannemora fire crews returned to the scene and found heavy smoke coming from the eaves that remained from the original fire.
The home was an older log cabin, he said, and "once that wood gets smoldering it's really difficult to get it out."
Firefighters tore the walls of the structure apart and sprayed foam on the area to extinguish what remained of the fire.
Greene said the Red Cross did offer assistance to the family who lived in the house; however, he is uncertain whether the help was accepted.
He was also unsure whether the home was insured. The names of the owners and occupants were not immediately available.
An investigation into the cause of the fire was completed Saturday night, Green said, and did not reveal anything suspicious.
