New Jay tax collector sworn in

JAY — Jessie McDonald has been sworn in as the new Town of Jay tax collector by Essex County Clerk Joseph Provoncha.

A Republican, McDonald was elected to the post in November and would have taken office Jan. 1, 2013. But the Jay Town Council wanted her to get a head start since the office was vacant, so she was appointed now.

She has already started her tax-collection training under the direction of the Essex County Treasurer’s Office in Elizabethtown.

McDonald has assumed the post held by June Taylor, who had the elected position for many years until her untimely death in an automobile accident in May 2012.

McDonald was sworn in on Dec. 7. She will serve the last year of Taylor’s unexpired term.

McDonald’s office will be located on the second floor of the Town of Jay Community Center in AuSable Forks at 11 School Lane.

The hours are Thursdays from 5 to 8 p.m. and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The new phone number for the tax collector is 647-5495, which is being activated now. Taxes may be mailed to Jay Tax Collector, P.O. Box 730, AuSable Forks, NY 12912, which is an address change from previous years.

The new address will be listed in next year’s tax bills.
