City to host mixed martial arts at Crete

PLATTSBURGH — Mixed martial arts are coming to the Crete Memorial Civic Center in Plattsburgh next year.

“I think this will be something that is very popular here,” City Recreation Director Steve Peters said.

City councilors recently agreed to allow Xtreme Combat of St. Albans, Vt., to host the event, billed as “The Battle in Plattsburgh,” at 6 p.m. Feb. 16, 2013.

Fighters will square off in a mixed martial art competition that features bare-knuckle and bare-feet punching, kicking and wrestling in a 20-foot-diameter caged ring.

Local fighters from Plattsburgh Combat Sports will be participating.

“This will be a lot of fun, and for those who have never been to one of these events, they should definitely check it out, because they will like it,” Xtreme Combat promoter Cathy Fitzgerald said.

“These guys (competitors) are all in great shape and well trained, and it really is cool to watch.”

LOGISTICS

The city will lay a floor down over the indoor soccer turf, pull out both sets of bleachers and set up chairs on the floor. Xtreme Combat will install the ring.

The Crete should be able to hold about 2,000 people for the event.

“We’ve had boxing and pro wrestling events here before, and it worked out well,” Peters said.

“We have some checks and balances to do, but we think this will be a great show for people.”

Xtreme Combat will cover all insurance and security costs, including pay for two City Police officers and emergency medical technicians, as well as providing its own security. The city will receive the event-day rental fee of $1,500 for use of the Crete.

Smooth Moves, the concessionaire at the City Beach, will provide food and drinks. There will be no alcohol.

If the event goes well, Peters said, another is scheduled for May 11.
