PLATTSBURGH — Space is available for those who want to show off their inner Santa to raise money for a local charity.
The 13th-annual Santa Night in Plattsburgh is scheduled for Friday, Dec. 13. Organizer Chris Huchro said the event has raised more than $100,000 for the Clinton County Christmas Bureau since the first local Santa Night in 2000.
“I’ve been involved with a lot of fundraisers. I think this is the most absolute fun you can have with a fundraiser,” he said.
Between 40 and 50 revelers dressed in holiday costumes will visit about a dozen local bars and restaurants, referred to as rooftops, to sing sometimes off-key Christmas carols and collecting donations from patrons.
The group has been enthusiastically received at the participating rooftops each year, Huchro said.
He can provide some costumes, but most participants enjoy the experience of creating their own, he said. Each participant is expected to raise at least $150 in donations before the event, with top fundraisers rewarded with prizes.
Ground Force One gives Santa Night a terrific rate on transportation for the event, Huchro said.
A number of corporate sponsors have contributed significantly to this year’s event.
Huchro and other participants used to shop for the Christmas Bureau, spending the money they raised, but now leave that up to the charity.
Santa Night was founded in Burlington in 1998 by Dan Ferrara and Bill Allen. Huchro heard about it and later met with Andrew Allen, who helped him organize the inaugural Plattsburgh event.
