PLATTSBURGH — Shortly after midnight on Monday, a broad swath of the North Country went dark.
Lightning struck an insulator at the Kent Falls substation, according to Clinton County Emergency Services Director Eric Day.
And 10,000 customers of New York State Electric and Gas lost power in the towns of Plattsburgh, Beekmantown, Peru, Schuyler Falls and Dannemora.
By 2:30 a.m., Day said in a press release, NYSEG had located the problem and was making repairs. Already, about 5,000 customers were back online.
“There is the possibility of additional short outages in the future as repairs are completed and systems are returned to normal operating condition,” he said in the middle-of-the-night release.
“These are expected to be minor and short in duration if they are required at all.”
As of 12:30 p.m., electricity had been restored to all but 15 of a total 27,581 customers in Clinton County, according to NYSEG’s website.
By late afternoon, power was completely restored.
“All repairs have been completed and systems are functioning normally,” Day said.
