First Weekends. 5 to 7 p.m. today, downtown Plattsburgh. Art Walk sidewalk Chalk Art competition, wine and cheese art opening, and performances by Convergence, Ben Bright, Jay Lesage, Giovanini Bucci, Bruce Lawson, James VanEtten, Herb Carter Jr. and Haley Wright-McGivney.

Book Sale. 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Westport Library, 6 Harris Lane. Special titles for sale include a collection of military books including Napoleon, the Civil War and World War I and World War II. Many are hard-to-find titles and include detailed maps, including Cannae 1931 (first American printing) by Count Alfred von Schlieffen; also for sale are books on the 1936 Olympics, art, music, nature and the Adirondacks.

Hike-athon. Eight hikes, one gathering at Lake George Land Conservancy’s Peggy’s Point, Hague. Free. Information at

Essex fireworks. At dusk, from Beggs Point in the Town of Essex.

Independence Day at Fort Ticonderoga. 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Celebrate America on the very ground where soldiers served to secure independence. Meet soldiers of the Continental Army Northern Department as they appeared when the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776. See how the demoralized, tattered Northern Army began rebuilding after a disastrous retreat from Canada and more. General admission: $17.50 for adults, $14 for age 62 and over; $8 for children 5 through 12; kids age 4 and under free.
